RENNICK

Two Weeks Later

Our one night with Laena would have to be enough to sustain us for the weeks after—duty called in the worst way. Reports of Eidolon hordes were cropping up around various areas outside the city, and numerous squadrons were sent out to keep them at bay. Casualties from each mission were on the rise, and with our dwindling manpower, we soon had to resort to utilizing our latest recruits for these scouting missions.

In other words, we were ordered to bring our Cadets into active duty, which in turn meant Laena would be brought into the mix. No matter what strings we tried to pull, we couldn’t prevent our Laena from joining us on each mission; the Elite had claimed we needed every able-bodied being out there. And our girl delivered when it came to wreaking all kinds of badassery on Eidolon monsters even when it wasn’t her job to do so.

She could track and hunt those things like she was born to it, and it didn’t cease to amaze the three of us how quick and adept she was at it. Because of her, there were less surprises out on our missions, and things were relatively safer, if not completely without danger.

The things Laena could do with her innate fighting ability were enough to spark enough hard-ons on my part, every single time I got to witness her kick ass hard on those things. Her hands and feet delivered blows with deadly accuracy; her speed almost inhuman as she cut a wide swath through a herd of them. But the three of us couldn’t stop worrying over her.

While we knew that she was deliberately placed in our cohort of Cadets, all thanks to Barclay Ardarien’s doing, there were things about her that still remained a mystery. There were times she would disappear from the group, and for all intents and purposes, it looked like she was going on ahead to scout for another wayward herd. Just when it seemed like she was gone too long, she’d suddenly appear to announce she spotted a herd further on ahead.

The terrain outside the city provided too many places to hide with its abundance of tall trees and rocky outcroppings. It wasn’t too far a stretch to imagine that Laena could be hiding behind one of those rocks or high up in the trees, with a pair of binoculars in hand, searching for signs of Eidolon movement. However, it had been glaringly obvious to us that Laena’s own seemingly inconspicuous movements had more to them than what we were actually seeing. Questions like why does she disappear with no word after calling point and why does she prefer to do it alone rang through our minds and were later voiced during our debriefs just among the three of us.

And it just so happened that we never got the chance to ask because we would find ourselves suddenly waist-deep in dealing with an Eidolon herd. Or running away from one. After five missions just like this, I decided I’d find out what our Laena was up to.
